Aegis Capital Corp – Four Important Tips to Consider When Writing an Effective E-mail

At Aegis Capital Corp.,one of the many tasks that consumes my day is e-mails. Keeping in contact with clients, speaking to colleagues and reaching out to people to source new business are all part of the day to day. Anyone can write an email but very few have the ability to write concise and effective emails. Below are the four steps I consider when creating emails:

Writing an Effective E-mail

Keep it Short: Most people do not have time in their day to read emails from people they know, let alone people they don’t. This is why I structure my emails in a way that my reader will understand the point in the first 5 seconds. Studies prove that you have less than ten seconds to capture someone’s attention.

Use a Catchy Subject Line: The sender, subject and part of the first sentence are the 3 parts that a recipient is able to see and decide if they want to open your email. With that being said, you don’t have many characters to work with. I like to ask a question in the email to pique interests. A sales e-mail may identify a cost savings- depending on your market or goals, this will obviously differ, but the concept remains the same. Also, many are even effective when using emojis in the subject line to set themselves apart.

The First Sentence: Use this short line to your advantage. Like mentioned in the previous bullet, this line is almost considered like a second subject line.

Bolding and Highlight: In my opinion there is no better way to grab someone’s attention than to bold or highlight a special part of your email that you are trying to get people to look at. Use this sparingly not to come off spammy or salesy. When done correctly it is very effective.

Working with Aegis Capital Corp. has taught me many skills, one of which is being an effective communicator. When you need people to hear your message and they don’t have time in their day to speak to everyone, you need to be concise to the point and interesting enough for them to want to hear what you have to say.
